Millie Close

Hi! I’m a part-time MSc student in Neuroscience with a collaborative spec. in Accessibility. I completed my Hons. BHSc concentrating in Disability and Chronic Illness with a Minor in Communication and Media Studies here at Carleton in 2021. I took a break from studies to work at Carleton in Undergraduate Recruitment & Admissions, Teaching & Learning Services on the SaPP & I-CUREUS programs, and now for the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs developing a new student leadership initiative!

Stemming from a love of science communication and a belief that science is for everyone, my research interests are focused on learning—specifically, how metacognitive factors influence student success in university STEM courses. I’m especially interested in metacognitive skill development, and how teaching practices can promote development of such skills and support the mental health and wellbeing of students. I’m passionate about inclusivity and accessibility, and love connecting dots from different disciplines!

Fun fact, I am a trained opera singer! I have my Grade 8 RCM in vocal music, I love to sing, and I am not afraid to shamelessly plug a musical when I’m in one
