Social Media Use Study

We are currently wrapping up a large study examining different components from addictions framework. First, neuroimaging techniques such as structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, and neuromelanin-sensitive MRI will explore the structure and functioning of the reward system and emotional dysregulation in problematic social media use. In addition, this study also investigates different psychosocial profiles such as different aspects of mental health (i.e. depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress, resilience, etc.), inhibitory control, social media use characteristics (i.e. hours of social media use, years using social media, passive use, etc.), and how they all may be associated with problematic use of social media.

Social Media and Stress

As part of the Cannabis Biomarker study, we will explore the relationship between stress (self-reported stress and cortisol) and problematic social media use, in addition to the role of individual coping styles.
